Benny Katz

Born in Sao-Paulo, Brazil (1973), Benny Katz conducts a search which intertwines between reality and biographical dimensions by using simple, light and accessible materials and merging painting with three dimensional objects in an attempt to penetrate the viewer’s space. His quest moves beyond social or political issues and focusses on innocence, simplicity and lost childhood in a cynical, post-modern industrial world. His works involve surrealism and dark humor by taking familiar themes and giving them dark, kinky, additional values. He studied visual arts at the Technion in Tel Aviv. His works have been exhibited in New York, Brazil, Israel and Italy—where he was awarded a special prize for painting at the Arte Laguna 3rd edition in 2009. After his personal exhibit in 2009 at Giudecca 795, he exhibited his works at the Biennal de Cerveira, Portugal.

from 2008 Arte Laguna catalogue: "An objective reality and a biographic dimension influence each other in an ironic but very serious game: Benny Katz recreates a world focusing on details that remind the user of common realities, suggested by close particulars. We could find many pompous ways to represent the tension between opposites, since what is unexpected decrees the supremacy of one element on the other. But the provocation becomes more and more strident when irony leads the way, maybe through the use of an shameful as much as familiar anomaly, such us the fall of a bar of soap in the toilet seat, a sharp as much as useless annoyance…"
